Battue:
Storm of the Horse Lords FAQ
STARTING THE GAME
How do we place pieces at the start of the game?
Players each pick an edge of the board to start on AND a starting board tile to
enter on. Think of this as the "entry tile" for the player. No player can pick
the same entry tile as another player. So each tower, which wraps around a
corner of the boards and exists on two edges simultaneously, can only be used as
an entry point for one player. Once a starting entry tile is picked by a player,
that is the only board tile that player can attempt to move to until his
starting horde is on the board.
Can I take a Recruitment action while my horde is off the board?
A player can elect to take a Recruitment action for his starting horde, even
while that horde is off the board. However, while a player's starting horde is
still off the board, once it has a maximum of 8 warriors it must attempt, on its
next turn, to enter the board. A player may, of course, attempt to enter the
board with fewer than 8 warriors. A player may take a Recruitment action before
they attempt to enter the board.
A player can only Retreat to an adjacent city tile he controls, and so a
player's horde can never Retreat off the board. Until a player's horde enters
the board, however, they may call off an attack (remaining off the board). On
the player's next turn he may take a Recruitment action or attempt to attack the
entry tile again.
What if all of my warriors are lost before I enter the board?
The rule which says that a player with no warriors on the board is eliminated
applies only to a player who has actually moved his starting horde onto the
board. A player who somehow loses all the warriors in his starting horde before
successfully entering a board is also eliminated.
FLIPPING TILES
When do I flip city tiles face up?
Unless a card effect tells you otherwise, a city tile is only flipped
immediately prior to the first battle against that tile. So, for example, if
you move your hordes onto three different tiles, you do not reveal them deciding
the order of the battles. Instead, immediately after all movement has been
declared, you decide which battle to fight first. If the battle is against an
unflipped city tile, you then flip that tile face up to reveal it. If the tile
indicates there is an event, resolve the Event Card, then resolve the battle.
PLAYING LOOT CARDS
When may I play a Loot Card?
Except for playing Loot cards defensively during combat, you may only play Loot
cards on your own turn. So, for example, a card that can be played at the
"Start of the Turn" can only be played at the start of your own turn. Except for
Attacker and Defender cards, you must always wait for the first Loot card you
play to resolve before you can play another Loot card. See also the rules below
on discarding cards like "Change of Fate" and "Unseen Allies".
So, what about Defense Loot Cards? Defense Loot cards may be played any
time you are the defender. This is any time you roll the dice to defend an
uncontrolled city tile or any time one of your controlled city tiles is
attacked.
EVENT CARDS
When are Event Cards resolved?
Some tiles grant Event cards. Event cards are drawn by the player revealing the
tile. Normally this happens immediately before the first battle over that
uncontrolled tile. However, some cards in the game allow a player to reveal a
tile without sending one of his hordes into the tile; such a player still draws
and plays the Event card normally for those tiles. Note that tiles granting
Event cards grant them only when the tiles are flipped face up (such as by the
"Recon" Loot card), not when tiles are merely looked at (such as by the "Partial
Map" Event). In general, the sequence for resolving a horde's movement to an
unrevealed city tile is flip the tile face up, completely resolve any Event
Card, completely resolve any battle, and then move on the the next horde.
What about eliminated players during events?
Ignore eliminated players when determining who has the "least warriors" for
Events like "Even the Odds".
And the 15th Legion?
If player affected by this event has two hordes of equal size tied for the
largest (for example, two hordes with seven warriors each), then that player
chooses which of his hordes will be affected by "The 15th Legion".
DRAWING CARDS
If the directions are not specific, may I chose what type of card to draw?
No. If a card tells you to draw a card, but is not explicit about where you
draw a card from, draw a card from the top of the Loot card pile, not the Event
pile.
DISCARDING CARDS
Do I discard from my War Chest? No. Unless a card effect explicitly says
otherwise, all cards which cause a player to discard cards only discard cards
from hand, not from a player's war chest.
How do multiple discard effects work?
Some cards like "Change of Fate" and "Unseen Allies", which discard themselves
plus zero or more other cards, and then count the total number of cards just
discarded. In these cases, remember to count "Change of Fate" or "Unseen
Allies" as one of the card discarded. For example, if you used the game text on
"Change of Fate" to discard "Change of Fate" and one other card, you could draw
2 Loot cards. Cards only count as being discarded to one effect at the same
time. So, for example, you cannot discard "Change of Fate" and "Unseen Allies"
to each other to draw 2 Loot cards and gain one warrior.
How long does a discarded card's effect last?
Cards that say they generate an effect when they are discarded only generate
that effect on your turn, not when your opponent forces the discard of a card
(such as he might do by playing the Loot card "Wastrel").
HORDES
What is a horde?
A horde is a group of 1 or more warriors in a single city tile (or off the edge
of the board at the start of the game). Rules allowing for the Recruitment or
addition of warriors to a horde, therefore, cannot be added on or off board to
form a new, previously non-existent horde. Therefore, eliminated players cannot
Recruit or benefit from Events in any way which would add new warriors to a
horde, because an eliminated player has no hordes. A player with no hordes on
the board and all 15 warriors in Reserve is immediately eliminated.
ELIMINATED PLAYERS
What happens to eliminated players?
Players who are "out of the game" or "eliminated" are subject to special rules.
Eliminated players continue to:
a) maintain their hand of cards, although they can only play
cards in defense of their controlled city tiles;
b) maintain control of their controlled city tiles and roll
for the defense of them;
c) maintain their war chest; and
d) calculate Victory Points using their
war chest and controlled City Tiles to determine the winner of the game (they
still may win).
Eliminated players no longer do the following:
a) take their normal turns during the game;
b) act as the "player on the left" of any player (the circle
of players collapses down by one as if that player was never in the game); or
c) gain warriors by any means.
